Why Are Vampires So Interesting?
74
Why is there such an interest in vampires lately?
Well actually it seems that vampires have been a subject of interest for many people for a very long time. There are plenty of black and white movies about vampires, even as far back as silent pictures consider, Bela Lugosi and Nesferatu.
Although vampires have piqued the interest of many people lately, they seem to be getting sexier and sexier than before, and ever since the Twilight series came out, there seems to be more and more interest in them.
I have always loved the history behind the vampire and the thought of these bloodsuckers creeping along dark alleys for their next victims, not only makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, but also I find it rather capricious and even rather sexy at times.
Anne Rice the author of the Vampire Chronicles, definitely paints a tantalizing picture of the vampire. She has a way of describing a vampire in such a way that the reader begins to find the vampire very likeable, and at times very romantic, and even sexy. After all Brad Pitt was the sexiest vampire I have ever seen, and definitely I would choose him over Jake or Edward Cullen of Twilight any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Still what makes the idea of a vampire so attractive to people? Is it the idea of living forever, or sleeping all day and staying up all night? Finding the need to fill their body with the blood of another person in order to sustain themselves ? Or is it the lovely protruding fangs that rip through the flesh of an unsuspecting victim?
Many years ago people would sometimes get buried because they were thought to be dead, but suddenly they would wake up and dig themselves out of the ground, and then when they appeared to people they knew, they were thought to be the walking dead. I think stories such as this probably started the idea of the living dead.
Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia
(1431–1476), was the ruler of Romania and was such a murderous leader, ruling with an iron fist and was known to impale his victims throughout the courtyard as a deterrent to people to behave. Bram Stocker revealed that his story of Dracula, was based loosely on Vlad the Impaler. The story of Dracula has been interpreted in so many different ways and dozens of books and movies its unreal.
I thought I saw a glimpse of a vampire once when I was working at a book store years ago. It was around 10 pm and I noticed a man with his back to me looking through a book, and he was wearing black clothes with a long black coat. He turned around as if he felt me behind him, his skin had a weird iridescent look to it, it almost looked translucent and I could even see the veins through his skin. His mouth was very red and he had very piercing eyes that seemed to lock with mine and held me there for quite sometime. Finally, he gave me a little smile and turned around but left me with a sense that I had seen something unnatural and weird. It almost seemed like he could read my thoughts as I must have looked so puzzled and surprised at his appearance. I don’t know if he was a vampire but I did walk away feeling like I had witnessed something not of this world, it was rather creepy but piqued my interest. I remember looking around for a second and when I turned back he was gone. I looked down the aisles of books and throughout the store, but it was as if he had disappeared into thin air.
I don’t know if there are real vampires out there, I highly doubt it, but I do believe that there are unnatural things that walk the Earth and sometimes appear to others in dark alleys, in supermarkets, and sometimes even in a bookstore late at night.

Interesting post. Oh, btw, I think the word you are looking for is piqued rather than peeked.
As far as Eastern European Vampires--the vampires of Eastern Europe (especially Ukraine) are more "psychic vampires". There are people who seem to just drain you of energy--this is also referred to as the evil eye. This is based in reality in that we all know people who are just negative and draining people.
Sometimes people would in the night just get weaker and weaker until they died. This was not necessarily the drinking of blood but the draining of energy. (Some vampires would be more like ghouls who would drink the blood of newly dead people).
Ukrainians pin a safety pin on their children or give a blue bead (or bracelet of such beads) that have a white spot painted on them with a black dot in the middle (resembling an eye). This is to protect them from the "evil eye" or psychic draining.
Reasons vampires are just so sexy
1. They're dangerous yet vulnerable.
Girls love bad boys, and vampires are very bad boys. They’re strong, fast, and deadly and they kill for all those attributes! But having that danger tempered with weakness is the genius part. They can’t go out in daylight. Add in garlic and silver, and you have a man who’s a bit helpless and irresistible!
2. Vampires possess eternal youth and beauty.
Vamps are physically gorgeous, supposedly a change brought on by their transformation from human to immortal. They’re nearly always depicted as physically perfect creatures, equipped to lure in their prey.
3. Biting and blood are inherently sexual.
Biting someone’s neck is sexy all on its own. Add in sucking life-giving blood from that neck, and it becomes all the more potent. In the case of “True Blood,” the biting is the single most intimate act a vampire can perform and is apparently the biggest sexual high to their human partners.
4. With age comes experience.
Vampires are blessed and cursed with eternal life, and many of them are centuries old. Think about how much a vampire suitor can learn about people, and especially about women, with all that time on his hands. And it’s not just because they can charm the pants right off you with that whole “glamouring” and “dazzling” thing.
5. Vampires are an exclusive club.
Vampires are loners or stick to their own, which makes sense--mortals are basically a meal. So, if you’re a human lucky enough to get up close and personal with a vamp and you’re not lunch, you’ve really arrived. Also, for many vampire fans, the appeal is in wanting to be one of them: strong, beautiful, and immortal.
Hi Valerie,
Really well put together hub. Really enjoyed it I am a big vampire fan too, love vampires and think they are so interesting and unique. i agree they do keep getting sexy those vampires haha. Like in True Blood you see Bill and Eric wow!!! lol. Vampire Diaries Damon and Stefan. I do love all those Tv Series as well as another one of my favourites is Blood Ties if you have ever heard of those series=) very good work Valerie
Love this hub! I would love love to be a vampire...especially if some hot vampire came along and was the one to turn me. lol Rated up!
This is a really cool hub. I wonder if the guy in the bookstore was just a really creepy guy or if he did have something strange going on. Maybe he was a ghost? Creepy!
Love this Hub! I'm quite intrigued by vampires as well. I even went to New Orleans once wondering if I'd meet one. Anne Rice's vampires are my favourite - by far!
I think one of the reasons that vampires are so interesting is that they're outsiders - they skirt the edges of society. Most of us identify with feeling like an outsider, especially during adolescence & young adulthood.
Your experience in the bookstore, late at night? I really want that to happen to me!
P.S. I shared this on my Fb page - hope it helps.
"VAMPIRES" are quite a curious mystry in themselves to open up.. quite true that they have an eternal youth and beauty.. n that is what makes them so captivating. i ll just love to know more on this topic.
Awesome post, Valerie!
I never thought why Vampires are so hypnotizing
I've given a lot of thought to this topic too and something about eternal youth is of interest to us. There aren't too many unattractive vampires so to be eternally beautiful would be a plus too. Great topic and great hub.
I wrote something similar to this about "beasts" fascinating us romantically. It begins with the old tale retold more times than any other story, "Beauty and The Beast".
Great read. I think people are fascinated by vampires because they are so powerful and yet so imprisoned to their vampireness...if that's a word..... :)
I usually like vampires story's. I watched vampire movies, read vampire books. Like this Hub a lot
Thanks for a very interesting hub. I read Dracula recently and was surprised by how much I loved it.
Vampires???
COOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL
That made me think also. Thanks for sharing this information. Keep it up.
I like the vampire diaries, because vampires are interesting.
Vampires of Old
Ever the dichotomy of Good and Evil, I have always been more drawn to the idea of a dark being, separate from the light, having sacrificed the pure and embraced the night.
Vampires to me were powerful beings, creatures that regenerated faster than you could cause them harm, ran faster than you could chase them, that came back for revenge at just the wrong moment, if ever you thought you had killed one. In my mind they generally held a high standing in nobility, they were the embodiment of self centered, arrogant power. So far detached from their lost humanity that people were little more than free blood, and game, in their eyes. They acted, I think, much like ancient kings with dark ambition.
I hardly agree with the creepy, frail, even monstrous idea of the vampire (as portrayed in Nosferatu) and I even less agree with the idea of a "good" vampire. People are prey, are they not? In a way, I could never accept that there were hippies among the living dead, desirous only to protect mortals.
That's just me though. More often than not i think that today's generation are more interested in the idea of dark Love. The feral nature of unrestrained passion, which name the vampires of today have been given. Which, in a way is unfortunate. As evil seeks fun, and falls short of true commitment.
I'm no authority on the matter, but I wonder if it has some thing to do with the great sense of sadness they have. Though they wouldn't let on, if they were real that is, they do seem to have this deep dark pain within them. Perhaps it's the complete and utter helplessness that seems to show-the vague sense of meakness that they use to lure us in. We can be sucker's for someone so down trodden that we can't turn away-we must help. Or perhaps their deep sadness makes us sad and we don't even know why-a whole misery loves company kind of thing. I don't know, but I do feel sorry for them just a minute bit. I wonder what would happen if they were ever given the chance to really change. If they came face to face with God or an Angel sent by Him to save the Vampire. Would they except salvation or not?
Great question for the Twilight fans! Nice article!
Thanks I've thought about that for a while just never had an outlet for it before. It's good to have one now.
Always loved vampires--even back to "Dark Shadows", the best soap opera of all time, re-did in the 90's with Ben Cross, not bad but no Jonathan Frid! The updated "sexy" vampires are cool, but strictly for the young crowd. Gary Oldman was one great vampire--that movie has it all--the great Anthony Hopkins--!
Alright Palo730! I was thinking HOW COULD BARNABAS BE LEFT OUT! I agree Ben Cross and that saga was ok, but NO way was it better than Johnathan Frid on Dark Shadows! First though does come Bela, as he's the first love for Vampires! But I never understood why Barnabas didn't fall for Angelique, she was so much prettier than Josette. But in the 90's remake, they spruced her up and switched them around. That part I was kinda disappointed in, although a much better Willy. :)
Thanks ValerieH! :)
Interesting hub, I was impressed that you did not sesationalize your encounter with the gentleman whom you thought might be one of the undead. My personal belief is that the "power" a Vampyre posseses would be the lure, and in that you respected the encounter, respected his strength. This immortality could be a curse as well as a blessing; outliving those you love with the only way to hold on to them is to change them. Damning them for all eternity, what a sad exixtence...Keep em coming, I voted you up and awesome, also a new follower. looking forward to reading more of your work...W
I saw this still open on a tab! lol.. I also wanted to say while I love the perfect photo of Bela, that my friend actually got Vlad the Impaler tattooed on him! They did a fantastic job! (I totally love Vampire hubs)lol!
Oh, I meant also to say that how the Vampire has a hold over someone after they bite them, Dan Curtis never put a name to it other than they could summon that person at will when they needed them, then with the new stories (like True Blood) they put the name Glamor on it, how they can be hypnotic! (But apparently not on Sookie the girl Bill the Vampire loves, but she, like Bella in Twilight have a special human power of their own) :)
@Walt: I like what you say about the curse being a curse as well as a blessing, well said. While they can live forever, like the girl Rosalie in Twilight says "she wanted a family and children, but we'll always be this" so she was sort of depressed about that, at the same time her life was saved.
the whole new wave has added a little insight, but ah, I can't let go of the past either! A sparkling Edward is a handsome boy, but NO SUN for a Vampire!! :)
That is incredible. I've never seen anyone akin to a vampire before but I've seen very strange, robotic type-stare-featured men with greased down hair and expressionless faces. I'm now intrigued for it's said there are people who practice wizardry and such, like Count Dracula. Fascinating hub.
I guess it's because people gets easily interested to those extraordinary creature. LOL!!! just like you I would choose Brad Pitt over Edward Cullen
Great hub. As you can see there are many interested and intrigued with Vampires. In early days the Vampire was a sexual creature mostly luring and commanding women. That may have started the interest, however, the endurance of the vampire legend goes on and evolves, sometimes better, sometimes worse.
Great hub! I for one am glad of the vampire craze because I've always loved vampire lore and now there's an endless stream of entertainment - books, movies, TV shows. When I first became interested, it seemed there was little more than Anne Rice, but now there are hundreds of authors to choose from.
It is interesting to me how people love the monsters that frighten so much (both vampires, and werewolves)! I believe it is the since of power that they have over us, and yet we seem to be stronger than them. Great hub!
There are many 'Old Ones' as you say still around. Not quite the creatures that you are looking for, but just as interesting.
Aoibheann
it is really nice ...i love vampires i love to see vampires movies ...... .....................
I've never been interested in vampires, but I've always liked the detailed gothic environments they originally reside in. Most of the time the atmosphere is more interesting than the subjects.
The concept to me has been flogged to death almost as much as the zombie trope, and really needs a stake in the heart to put it to rest for a few dozen years. Werewolves haven't quite been dimished in terms of quality yet, but my bet is that they're next.
Vampires.....they are scary, they are hot and i love what they do with their long teeth. Put them in the neck of people and the way they suck blood is simply awesome. I have seen so many vampire's movies and every time i do enjoy B-)
Hi ValerieH.... Something interesting to read!!!
Just chiming in to say for those like Vampire or Zombies, might like 30 Days of Night. Great flick. Oh and:
@Aoibheann: They are colorizing them and a lot of older horror films. :)
@John Orton: I agree, I agree, especially when they do that sexy face and swallow before they bite so nothing waters down the newly found plasma. lol
Gary Oldman is definitely the best vampire in my opinion. No one else could play Dracula in my eyes. Look at the others who have attempted. Gerard Butler... that is the worst Dracula that has ever appeared on a movie... EVER.
Interesting. I just published a hub about vampires when I stumbled across this. Thought provoking stuff.

Fascinating hub, Valerie. Now that you look back at that unnerving experience, do you think you actually saw a Vampire or someone masquerading as one? With exceptionally good makeup.
Thanks for sharing this interesting glimpse and thanks also for linking to my Vlad Dracula Interview. Will happily return the favor. Muhwaaahaaa!
